Meet the President, Joe Buckman

USA Dance Bluegrass Chapter, 2007-2008

Many of you may know Joe, our Treasurer for the past two years, as the guy who frequently sat at the admissions table in the lobby, and led the dance mixer.

The following are Joe’s responses to several interview questions.

Tell us something about yourself.
I am married to Cathy Buckman, and we have two daughters, Laura and Marie, ages 16 and 12, respectively. Professionally, I am a Certified Public Accountant, employed as an Internal Audit Supervisor for the Office of Inspector General in the Cabinet for Health and Family Services (Commonwealth of Kentucky).

How long have you been involved in ballroom dancing, and how were you introduced to dancing?
I took one year of lessons several years ago at a Fred Astaire studio in St. Louis, and then moved to Lexington in 1987. My wife, Cathy, had been taking lessons at Arthur Murray Dance Studio in Lexington for several years up until the time we married in 1989. We resumed dancing a few years ago when Hunter Lisle, a former dance partner of Cathy, opened the Lexington Arthur Murray Studio. I then started taking lessons again.

What is your favorite dance and why?
Hustle is my favorite dance, and is also one of Cathy's favorite dances. It’s a great cardiovascular exercise. (Perhaps you have witnessed Joe running to find Cathy when a Hustle number is played).

How long have you been a member of USA Dance and the Bluegrass Chapter?
I have been a member of the Chapter since the Fall of 2004 and attended dances as a non-member. I joined so I could volunteer to serve on the Board and as the Treasurer.

What are your goals for the Chapter?
I want to leave the Chapter is as good a condition when my two-year term ends as when I inherited it. To do this, I am committed to serving the membership by making sure that all of the Chapter dances are the best we can make them. I see this as the Chapter’s primary goal.

For a Chapter to achieve those goals, it is important to develop a strong corps of volunteers to become involved in helping those who have accepted responsibility as officers and board members. My main focus will be to develop this corps of volunteers. In doing this, we will make it more likely that the Chapter will be able to provide dancing for the Bluegrass area for many years to come.

What advice would you give beginners?
Don’t get frustrated. Even the best dancers experienced frustration when they were just beginning. Your perseverance will pay off.
